The MathPlus Bucks Program is an incentive program geared towards motivating our students to work during the summer, all while maintaining their focus and distracting them from the “dread” of doing academic work during the summer. Although it sounds counter-intuitive, the best tutoring work is usually done during the summer when the students do not have the heavy burden of passing classes and completing school assignments. The summer is an opportunity to work with no pressure, cover the crippling math deficiencies that always carry over in the next grade, and this is also the time to discuss attitudes, motivation and in general, good behaviors that make a student excel. And for us at Atlanta MathPlus, the BEST way to do this is to use our MathPlus Bucks Program!
In the MathPlus Bucks Program, each student gets to discuss with his/her tutor about a few small cost items ($25 or less) that he has always wanted but could never find or get. Our program coordinators will do their research and look into obtaining two or three of these items, and the student will have to earn “bucks” in order to get the prizes! Students can earn bucks for getting problems correctly, completing small homework assignments, or even if parents and guardians report good behavior in between sessions. Of course, the bucks can be used to manage break time during sessions or even to get small snacks (chips, soda, etc.) Conversely, students are charged bucks when they are stuck in a math problem, and the are “fined” for talking, not focusing on work, or exhibiting poor behavior in general. When the reach the bucks value of predetermined prize, they can redeem the bucks and get their prize! It’s like Christmas with a “MathPlus” twist…
